Cycle of Transparency

Found this awesome graphic on the Sunlight Foundations web site.

It highlights the feedback cycle that occurs when you implement policy and execute on that policy.

We are seeing graphic evidence of this in the US right now. Freedom of Information requests are increasing because people now have information to consume and ask about. I talked to one guy who has seen their requests go from 300 to 3000 per month since data.gov went live.

Information begets a demand for more information. Openness is demanded and delivered not just promised.

The graphic also illustrates what happens if any one of the pieces fail…the cycle is not completed and there is no feedback.

In Canada we are seeing that illustrated as well, the government talks about openness and has created policy but has done little to encourage the execution of those policies…so the cycle comes to a grinding halt.
